My ds8 loves to listen to audio books, and is very interested in early American History, esp. greats like Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. He has also expressed interest in TX history, Santa Ana, Sam Houston, the Alamo, you name it. Do y’all have any recommendations for biographies or historical fiction we might find that would be appropriate for an 8yo? He has enjoyed reading Johnny Texas with me, and a radio drama (Your Story Hour, I think) about Abraham Lincoln. We also have some Boys of Grit stories I downloaded a while back that he enjoyed. I’ve tried searching Librivox and found it a bit overwhelming.

    Thanks!

We really like audio books too.  There have been several posts about this in the past.  You might try searching for audio books. While not biographies, ome of our favorites are:

Where the Red Fern Grows read by Anthony Heald

Jonathan Park series (not the zoo, aquarium)

    Sugar Creek Gang

Anything by R.M. Ballantyne or G.A. Henty

    Bud and Me

Some of our favorite resources are:

Library.  I search for titles and the request them

    Christianaudio.com

    bluebehemoth.com

    librivox.org

I thought librivox was a bit overwhelming too, and like http://www.myaudioschool.com/ becasue she has an easily navigatable site and the books are from librivox.org.  She has tons of radio programs and other things that might be of interest to you as well.  I paid $14.95 for a years membership and didn’t mind because I wasn’t spending so much time trying to find something.  If you click on the headers at the top it brings up the things that she has under that topic.  I just download the books and we are good to go.  =)

    Thanks for the suggestions! 🙂

Pollysoup, you’re right. I’ve found answers to my questions many times here without ever having to ask. 🙂 But since I was concerned about age appropriateness, I decided to go ahead and post a question. Recently I had picked up an audio book at a library sale, The Eagle and the Raven, and found there was some inappropriate dialogue after we started listening to it. I was hoping to avoid making that mistake again. But probably anything that’s been suggested here would be fine. So I’ll go ahead and do a search and see what I come up with.

    Thanks, y’all. 🙂

Yes, language appropriateness is always a concern.  Occassionally I will be reading something aloud to my children, and have to edit the language if I feel it is inappropriate.  That’s much harder to do when listening to an audio book or watching a movie.

I remember reading The Eagle and the Raven 10 or 15 years ago.  While I did enjoy the book at the time, and actually read alot of Pauline Gedge’s work back then (she writes primarily novels set in Ancient Eygpt although this one was set in Britan) I have to say they are not appropriate for children.

My older son in particular likes to listen to audio books.  I am considering getting Story of the World on CD for this purpose, though I haven’t really considered using it as a curriculum.  At least not at this point.  We are taking an easy year to ease into homeschooling.  We will begin Canadian Social Studies later in the fall, then possibly start Mod 1 the following year.

There must be two books with the same title. The one we picked up is by James Michener. Its about “Sam Houston, Santa Anna and the epic struggle over the independence of Texas.” It is actually rather interesting and ds was enjoying it. But towards the end the author put in some fictional dialogue that I didn’t really want him listening to. Embarassed

Adventures in Odyssey has some radio dramas about history.  One is a 2 part called: Linoln I and II.

You should get him an account at Audible.com. 😀 If you register yourself for an account you can give him “credits” to spend. It’s an audio book club and fantastic!

By The Great Horn Spoon would probably be something he’d adore. My historical loving boys talk about years later!

21 Balloons is another historical type book for kids

    The Courage Of Sara Noble

    Sign Of The Beaver

    Secret Of The Andes

    Blood On The River

    Little Britches Series
