OK, so we’re reading Around the World in 100 years as part of module 4 and I’m trying to figure out if it’s blatantly anti-Christian or if it’s just mildly biased and the facts are pretty much the facts. I know so little about this time period that it’s hard for me to differentiate. I don’t want to be oblivious to the rotten things that people have historically done in the name of Christ, but I also don’t want to just read the bias without some type of explanation that the person that wrote the book is bias against Christians. We’re finding it very interesting, but I need a little guidance.
Thanks!
Tecrz1ParticipantWhen we read that book (2 years ago!) it was definitely my children’s favorite of the entire year! 🙂 I seem to recall discussing some things with them along the lines you mentioned. My children were pretty young but they were able to understand that the mindset of people during that time was different than it is now, and that what an author believes and writes is not necessarily the truth or what everyone thought. I read this aloud and I believe I did some editing or “softening” on the fly too. We had some good conversations about it though so I didn’t completely omit it.

butterflylakeParticipantI am not personally familiar with the book, but Amazon has reviews, several of which address your concerns. You may find reading them helpful.

TailorMadeParticipantWe used it last year during Module 4. Some discussion was needed in a few places, but overall, like Tara, it was a favorite! Our youngest saw it in a bookstore recently and said, “Look, Mama, it’s our book.” ;0)
KarenParticipantI found the thread!
The “softening” is definitely what I’ll do.
