We are using 106 Days this year (2nd and K) and I am looking at purchasing one of the Apologia books for next year but my sister told me that it has “to much text and not enough hands-on”.  Does anyone agree with this assessment and if so what do you use?

My 9 yo is using the Elem. Astronomy as part of our co-op and she’s really enjoyed it. She has learned a lot and has had plenty of hands on. She wants to do the Anatomy one next. It might be a bit wordy for the youngest ones, but you can always cover it more slowly.

I know people who love NOEO and Real Science for Kids. NOEO uses living books and dk type books. Real Science 4 kids is a text.

    Kristen,

I’m new here, but I’m not new to Apologia. My children are 7th and K level. Though we are really into Nature

Study, Nature Journaling and all the wonderful Charlotte Mason methods, I found that Apologia can be worked in

beautifully. My son is really into science, and being in 7th this year, I put him in a homeschool co-op Apologia

General Science Class. Yes, there is a lot of text to cover and adapt to, but we do a lot of hands-on activities outside of the Lab experiments. He learns best hands-on, so I read what the module is about, and find things to go along. It works well with us. Now, my Kindergarten daughter must do as much with brother as possible, so we have been working on the Apologia Exploring Creation With Astronomy together. It is more about journaling and hands on activities. We go out and look at the stars and planets and journal what we see. It’s exciting and fun at the same time. We will be using Apologia Exploring Creation with Botony next year. I like the information all in one place and then I’ll find living books to read with them on the suggested subjects. As I said earlier, it works well for us, It may not for others-that’s the beauty of homeschooling, there is not one way of doing things. I will say, I have seen several textbook curriculums and tried some before finding the Charlotte Mason Method, And Apologia is not your standard textbook. All the ones I have used so far have been written by one author who  adamantly loves the subject they are writing about and their love for God’s creation stands out to the reader. Maybe you can check out the books first hand at a book fair to see if it would be a fit for you. I have enjoyed using them and adapting them to our CM methods of learning. Just remember, nothing can take the place of walking out in God’s creation and seeing, touching, and writing about it with your children. I would not trade it for anything. Hope you find the perfect book(s) for your children. Be blessed! MelanieC.

We’ve done Astronomy and are currently doing Zoology I.  Love these books!  I think that combined with Nature Study there is plenty of hands on.  The text is very engaging and honoring to God. My kids are 10 and 7. Blessings, Gina
