Anyone Familiar With LearningAlly.org for Children With Learning Disabilities

My educational consultant recommended it for audiobooks for my daughter because of her dyslexia. I went to their website and it looks like they have audio textbooks, but I was wondering if anyone here ever used it for living books and if it would be worth $100+/year. It sounds like they have a lot of titles, but not sure if it would be worth it. I don’t want ‘textbooks’.
I’m wondering the same thing. I first heard about it on a Yahoo Group called Heart of Reading. You might consider checking there if you don’t get a response here.

MelissaHi, Ladies! I just spent some time going through the books since we utilize audio books a lot for my dd.
It might be worth it – you would have to check other resources like librivox, my audio school, books should be free, and others for books in the public domain. Audible.com also has several that are more current. I also purchase a few used audio cd’s from Amazon.
also, you cannot burn a disc without having the DAISY player to re-play it – so you are tied to an iPod, a Mac or a PC for the audio part (although the kids can read on the floor or whatever within listening distance). I didn’t think that the voices that I heard was all that great.
This is what I came up with with regards to living books through 6th grade:
Grade 1:
The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer
The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt (although I would think that the 4th grade and up would appreciate and understand this more) – Landmark Book
The Librarian Who Measured the Earth
Grade 2:
Series called “Science of Living Things” – 3 books (we have some)
If you lived series – 3 books
a couple of biographies (not necessarily living)
Grade 3:
Pocahontas: Childhood of Famous Americans
Handel Who Knew What He Liked
Amelia and Eleanor Go For A Ride (based on a true story)
Secret of Priest’s Grotto: A Holocaust Survival Story
True Story of Pocahontas
Riddle of the Rosetta Stone

The rest all look like textbooks to me. I did not check the older grades.
I have used them. They used to be called Recording For The Blind & Dyslexic. At one time you could get a free membership with an official diagnosis of dyslexia. That is what we did. When it was about to change over to a paid subscription, I stocked up on audio books. My dd listens to books on cd almost every day. I found tons of material for her…good literature. I don’t know if it is worth the $100 a year though…there are so many other options now for audio books.
sheraz, Thanks for checking that out. Sounds like some good ones, but I agree with pinkchopsticks. Probably not worth the $100, though I should find some audio books while she is working through the Barton System. She is not to read anything, but what is included in the Barton System until she gets to a certain point. I will check out some of those other sites you mentioned.
