Okay, the first joker who offers to send us a package of ant traps gets a glaring look from me….

I wasn’t too settled with this idea, but my 11yo dd wants an ant farm. The unseasonably warm weather we had two weeks ago brought forth some large black ants that had a sleepover on my kitchen table, but I’m done shuddering over that, so I’m ready to consider buying the farm. (Drop the ant traps & stop laughing, I meant the ant farm!)

So, any advice or suggestions? I know nothing about ant farms, but I took a quick look at a science tools website and they seem affordable. Thanks.

We had one for awhile and enjoyed it. It was very neat to watch the ants and see what they did everyday. They never stopped working which was the interesting part. I think that for a good easy learning lesson it is well worth the money. Just my 2 cents

We haven’t had one yet, but my 2 oldest want one. (What pet *don’t* they want? LOL) They have some on Amazon, too. I don’t know if I like the green gel ones. I’d rather have sand/dirt like they have in real life. Plus I think sand would be easier to clean up than gel… 😉 There are also directions online for how to make your own, if you want to go really cheap.

We had a gel one a few years ago that was a gift. It was fascinating to watch and there was no clean-up at all as it was totally self-contained. I think we need a new one, so thanks for mentioning this.

We did an ant farm last year.  We enjoyed it!  We bought ours on Amazon.  I just looked for one that had good reviews and was in our price range.  They can be very inexpensive.  Have fun!  You will probably have to teach your kids that ants don’t eat like us and that they don’t need vast quantities of food!  Our dd wanted to feed them constantly!  =)

We got the gel one back in November. It was very interesting – you just dump the ants in and then observe. That’s it!

They lived for about three months. We could have cleaned out the dead ants and put new ones in there, but we didn’t.

We had one last year I bought it for my DS birthday. We had a ball. Just make sure you are there to get the ants in the mail when they come.  It maybe to hot or cold and you may loose more than you wantwd to. Oh, and you may want to get a funnel when you put them in the farm. Just in case you forgot to put them in the fridge to slow them down, Just in case you accidently spill a few because the whole in the farm is smaller than the tube they come in. 🙂 Really, they are no problem I am sure you just don’t want any of those ants all over the table… 🙂  ( snickering under my breath)

I bought ours on e-bay. I got a buy one get one free. They hooked together. You may want to have a permanent place for them though besides the table just incase they get bumped and the path they were building encloses one in. Sometimes they don’t get out…. 🙁   I think I would like to try the gel kind next time though.

Kids loved it. I think we may try them again soon. Ours were cut off from their water supply. They kind of need that. 🙁   Better luck next time I guess. 🙂

If you ever have a problem with Ants a solution of  Water, sugar and Boric acid boiled will make a syrup. Then, pour the syrup in a milk cap and place near where they are coming in. It will kill them all. They will take it back and feed their queen and it kills her.  Now that is a better experiment that is fascinating. They will come to the cap and drink for hours. They have guards stand there watching over the colony. Usually 3 at a time.  Protecting the workers as they eat. First you will only see one or two then a slew!  Then in a day or two only a few. Then none and the experiment is done! 🙂  I would do this experiment before the experiment with the ant farm this way they can see in real life how they act.  For fun we would mess with the worker ants… (more snickering..:))

I hope you have fun with this I actually enjoyed it more then the ant farm. Since you already have an abundance of them coming in. I say go for it and it may only cost you a few bucks for the boric acid from a pharmacy or an animal feed type store.

If you try it let me know how it went. 🙂 We use to sit for hours watching them…. Oh, they are a great babysitter.  Just make sure you keep it out of reach of children and animals that might try to eat it. Make a cover for it out of a upside down small clay pot if pets will be around when you are not watching it.  This is my warning label…. 🙂

              Blessings!

You can make your own ant farms out of a cd case.  http://askabiologist.asu.edu/how/building-ant-farm

I know around here our ants are more sturdy then those we paid for LOL.  It would be a nice nature activity as well.
