Now that we’ve decided to slow down and pace ourselves through Mystery of History to be ready for SCM module 2 next year, does anyone have any book suggestions for ancient Sumeria around Abraham’s time? MoH has a tiny blip about it but there is so much more there that I want to explore, I just don’t know of any resources.
Thanks in advance!
HeatherParticipantbumping…anyone?

nebbyParticipantI was looking back at what we used. Overall I was disappointed with a lot of what we found on ancient Mesopotamia–the lack of material that is. We read books by Elaine Landau with titles like The Sumerians and the Babylonians. They are not really living history but they are fairl readable and are not the eyewitness variety with lots of facts and little blurbs covering up a page (which I hate). L. Zeman has books on Gilgamesh and other legends/myths which are very good. They are like long picture books. If you get to Babylon and Assyria soon, I highly recommend Babylonia and Assyria by Mohr-Washburn. It is a narrative telling of life in those cultures. There is a lot of common culture in Mesopotamia so to a certain extent studying one can help you with the others.
joannarammellParticipantthis is a list of books that Tapestry of Grace recommends from creation to rome for elementary through before high school. i don’t recommend all those books about gods. but there were two books that had Mesopotamia in the title…Life in M was one, and the other was just called M. Click on book title for description. There might be others in that list…some of their sources are quite good.

HeatherParticipantI just found some good ones at the library from your suggestions and just placed them on hold. You ladies are so dependable and I thank you!
Rachel, if you have any more ideas I am looking for 1st-4th grades w/ a K listening in.
Thanks again!
Rachel WhiteParticipantgr. 4-6:
The Gilgamesh epic poem is from Sumer. There is a trilogy version that would be appropriate for your older ones (say 8 yr. old and up) from Ludmila Zeman-http://www.amazon.com/Gilgamesh-King-Trilogy-Ludmila-Zeman/dp/0887764371/ref=wl_mb_hu_m_9_dp
YOu Wouldn’t want to Be a Sumerian Slave-Jacqueline Morley (lighthearted)
First Book of Ancient Mesopotamia and Persia-Charles Robinson
Ancient Mesopotamia-Virginia Schomp
Science in Ancient Mesopotamia-Carol Moss
For your own reading so you can in turn educate:
Sumerians/Ur of the Chaldees-C. Leonard Woolley (archaeologist who first excavated Sumer)

HeatherParticipantThank you Rachel! I just put all of these on hold at the library except for one that they don’t have.
Thank you so much!!
KirstykbartMemberI know this post is a couple of months old now, but I came across this book and thought I’d share.
It is a lovely picture book, and the story is based on a poem found on a clay tablet found in Sumeria. I haven’t read it to my 2 yet, but hopefully will next week.
