    Hi ladies!  🙂

I’m not new to Charlotte Mason’s methods but now have found myself in a new chapter of life (and I’m not a spring chicken).  🙂  Our oldest (now 28) was educated Charlotte Mason style, but I mostly put things together myself.  Sure wish I had something like this then!  🙂  Then my daughter (now 18) was educated mostly through the literature/history/geography/Bible of Sonlight and other curriculum but definitely with Charlotte Mason methods implemented.  Also as you can see, my children were spaced far apart.

Through adoption we have added 4 more children to our family.  Our 9 year old son (adopted from China) has been with us since he was 2 1/2 and we have mostly done basic subjects with the use of narration and copywork.  He has been exposed to Bible teaching all along but when it comes to American History, not so much.  (Shame on me I guess, but we were busy with the basics – he struggles with reading).

Now we have 3 more girls added to our family through foster care, and now adoption – Ages 9, 7, and 5.  They have now been with us for nearly 2 years.  Since the adoption will be final soon, we will be able to homeschool them.  The past two years those school-aged have had to attend public school.  They came from a background with no knowledge of the Bible at all, so this has all been new to them and they have learned a great deal already.

The question I have is concerning History modules.  I feel like the 3 girls could really benefit from starting with module 1 – Genesis Through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt but waiting for American History to cycle around for my 9 year old son just seems like too long, although I know he would also learn a great deal from module 1 as well.  And I feel like he is eager to dig deeper into history.

I would like to keep all 4 of them together for everything possible just to keep togetherness and keeping things simpler.  My question is:  Would there be a way to combine module 1 with maybe module 5 to be doable in a year – maybe using them side by side but being sure to record what and who we study in our Book of Centuries?  And how would this look in a schedule for the year?

I hope all this makes sense.  Thanks in advance for any input or guidance anyone can provide!

I am planning a sort of spin on this same idea, though mine are younger. I  also have not done this yet so I don’t know how it will go;)

I am planning to do module 1 pretty much as written. It is a lot of Bible and connects it to history which I love. I want my kids to get American history too though so I am going to read aloud some American History novels in chronological order. I got my book choices from SCM and Christine Miller’s book. We are just going to start a novel read it till its done then start the next one on my list. I am not using a spine for American history. My goal is familiarity with people like Columbus the pilgrims Washington ect. I am not planning to do the map work or geography or bible associated with the American history.  We will just look at maps while we read.  Since the ancient one is Bible Monday- Wednesday this would be a good time to add in some American history read a louds.

If you want it planned for you I think you could use both guides just skip the geography and maps and Bible with the modern one. That would leave you with one to do 5 days and one to do like 2 or 3 days. I think you would have too much to do to do both in their entirety.

Roslyn’s idea sounds really neat! I never would have thought of that! I was just going to say that you could just do a year of American History with everyone and then just start over at the beginning. Nine years old is still very young and you have plenty of time to learn history. Like 9 more years plus the rest of there lives!😆

Thank you Rosalyn!  That is along the lines of what I was thinking.  I honestly don’t know if I would get the guide for the American History then.  Just exposing them to American History through good living read alout books would be enough for me at this point and use the Ancient History one as listed in the guide.  Thanks for easing my mind on that and showing me how it could work in the schedule!

I’m not sure what book you are referring to though with the Christine Miller one?

Do you have a list of books in chronological order that you plan to use?  What you said is just what I want to do – expose them to it but delve into the Ancient History with everything.

    Thanks so much!  🙂

Thank you Aimee!  You are right of course…..9 is still young!  That’s what happens when you have another 9 year old in public school coming home with things that make you do the comparison thing, right?  🙂

Also though my son has asked about people in American History so I think he is kind of craving it or at least interested in it.

Thanks for taking time to input!  🙂

Those aren’t totally in order but its my ideas so far. My kids will be 4 and 6 but are used to listening to chapter books. We have already read little house in the big woods and several burgess animal stories as an idea of the level of these books. I would say they are all about 1-3 or 4 grade. I check 1/2 price books every do often and add any that look good I also raid my moms bookshelves as she homeschooled us a few years ago…

All through the ages by Christine Miller is published by nothing new books and is a great list of books arranged by time and student age. I really like it.
