I’m trying to decide which study guide to use for Ancient History.  We want to cover it in 1 year, as opposed to 3…  My question is, which one is best for not spending a lot of time on mythology.  I’m looking at the new version of intermediate Ancient History with Beautiful Feet and the Wayfarers Ancients.  I haven’t read all the books listed with each so I’m hoping to draw on your experiences.

    Thanks!

My daughter completed the BF Ancient Intermediate study in 7th grade and loved it! She did read D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths and Tales of Ancient Egypt as part of the study, but I wouldn’t say the focus was on mythology.

I also read the D’Aulaire book to my son, who was in 6th grade at the time. Their books are just so good! We simply read the stories, narrated and moved on. My kids thought many of the stories were ludicrous and didn’t put much stock in the mythology part. They realize many of the ancient civilizations practiced pagan worship.

I am not familiar with Wayfarers so can’t compare, but will say we are huge BF fans. I did blog through my daughter’s study if you’re interested in learning more about how we used it….

You should be able to click links within that post to see samples of her notebooking pages as well. I added a few AO reads along with her BF study, but only because she’s a voracious reader and wanted to. It is absolutely not necessary to add to the BF study.

We just finished the middle school and high school BF ancient history.

We enjoyed it and would do it again with some tweaks 😉

My kids definitely read about mythology but we laughed about how ridiculous it was.  I also was able to show them the difference between our perfect God and man made gods who were as bad or worse than people.

I did not like the Streams of Civilization that was used as the spine.  It was very dry and boring (eyes glaze over when reading it), and I believe it had evolution in it, but you could always use a different spine or skip over the stuff you don’t like.  When I use it for my youngest, I will find a different spine.

I’ve never used the other curriculum, only BF.
