Wow, Sonya! Thanks for answering my question so quickly.
We have gently started narration. While we do our family Bible Time I have the boys narrate the story, then when we read the suggested books from 106 Days, and any book he is reading independently (and he always has a book these days, yeah!) I ask him what is going on in the book or he just gives me snippets here and there from what he finds funny or interesting. I have to say that he is my child that has a difficult time with verbal expression so any narration that I can tell he’s put effort into I accept. Even just trying to say what is on his mind can be difficult, let alone something he has read and now you want him to retell it, ugh! He had me guessing in the beginning of the school year if he was dyslexic. I just couldn’t understand how he could confuse such simple words over and over while he read aloud. It was very frustrating, to say the least. I have learned patience and that he just needed more foundational skills and me getting off his back. He can become overwhelmed with too much information in printed form. But, he has been on the upswing with his reading skills and his interest in reading has soared tremendously this past year. I am exposing him to better literature and just trying to always encourage him without overwhelming him. Also, his dad has never been an avid reader so I’m trying to go against predisposed DNA, lol. I am proud of my sons improvements and this is one area where I can’t push or he’ll withdraw and I don’t want that:)
I was just thinking that there was something else we should be doing since in the pschools the students would definitely be doing textbook style lang. arts. We are part of a charter and they do expect a sample ever so often, but I can work around that.
I’m going to reread your post and take your advice regarding the AG, and make plans for next years goals. I really appreciate your imput.
