Many of you have probably heard this, but I love it.

“Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.”

I heard Chris Davis (from the Elijah Company) say this on one of his homeschooling tapes. My children were young and I was just learning how to homeschool and I’ve really tried to keep this in mind no matter what we are doing.

It is so very true. And you know it is harder to light a fire than fill a bucket. Sometimes I get so hard on myself thinking it should be so much easier. Sometimes it is hard and we just have to have perseverance and be thankful that the Lord is molding us to be who He wants us to be.

Love this quote. I had not heard it before. This is definitely a quote I will also get my dd to put in her book of mottoes. Usually I let her find her own mottoes to write but every now and then I give her one. This is one that I will give her and that we will talk about.

I know that last time I went camping with my dd we had a VERY hard time getting our fire started. First we tried to do it with nothing (stones and sticks…it was funny…LOL). Then we tried matches. Still couldn’t get it to catch. Then we bought some ‘fire starters’ from the camp store. STILL couldn’t get it to light! Finally our camping neighbor came to our camp site with some charcoal (guess he saw two girls struggling…LOL…single mom so it is just me and my dd)…LOL! We finally got it lit (using the charcoal and with help) and enjoyed some hotdogs and smores. Our neighboring campers joined us for the meal. It just shows that we can try and try and try to light these fires alone but it just doesn’t work. We need help from our neighbors (friends and family) and of course we should NEVER try to light these fires without our God! With God and all our loving friends and family the fire can be lit and it can burn and burn and burn!

    Be blessed,

    ~DawnC~

I like that, thanks for sharing! I would love to hear some other favorite inspiring quotes…sort of a thread of mottoes! 🙂

    Here’s one….

“Do small things with great love.”-Mother Teresa. So simple, yet so relevant to moms who daily serve their families.

@Rene – that is one of the quotes that I have come to hold dear.  It’s a great reminder on those days, like Shanna mentioned, to lighten up a bit.

@DawnC – I like the camping story.  Very good illustration. 🙂

@Simple Home – I really like that idea.  I know there was a thread w/ educational quotes in it earlier… I think it was the thread about school rooms, perhaps.  Can’t quite remember right now.  At any rate, I, too, would like to have a thread of mottos/ quotes.  I like to collect quotes. 🙂

Would anyone else be interested in a thread of mottos/ quotes?  If so, I don’t want to hijack Rene’s thread, shall we start another?

This whole section of the forum called Our Book of Mottoes is full of quotes that we moms have collected. Usually it has one quote per thread, so others can comment on them (and find each one easier at a later date). Feel free to post your favorites here. We would love to see them!
