We do Classical Conversations along with our CM homeschooling. I don’t push the memory work; we just use it for exposure and I’m trying to keep things in line with gentle learning at home.

Next year we will be doing American history and geography at CC so I thought I’d do that the rest of the week, too. I’m looking for a good American history spine for a second grader. I really want to use Stories of America, but I’d need both of them and that makes the price a bit much. (Not out of the question, though.)

    Any recommendations?

Have you checked out http://www.mainlesson.com? It’s free and they have a number of books for American history. I haven’t read any of their books on American history for that age range so I can’t recommend any. But I think there are others on the forum here who have used some of them.

    Hope that helps!

You could try American History Stories by Mara Pratt. It is a 4 volume set available online free as book or audiobook.

We are using the Mara Pratt’s volumes, as well. I think I bought it for $1.99 from Yesterday’s Classics for my Kindle because the online reading had the adds, and whatnot, which distracted my ds.  Plus one of the adds would accidently get hit and then we’re off the page, LOL. I’m trying to do a notebook with my ds like Linda Faye has at Charlotte Mason Help.

I would like to know where the audio versions are; those would be even more helpful these days.

There are a lot of audio books at Booksshouldbefree.com .

    my3boys,
At http://www.mainlesson.com, you can actually choose display options when you are reading a book. If you click on a book to read, towards the top of the page, there’s a button you can click on that says “Customize Your Display Preferences.” You can change size of font, remove the banner, and more. Just thought that might be helpful. 🙂

I have the Jim Hodges audio of Pratt’s books – http://www.exodusbooks.com/category.aspx?id=7302

    Very well done.

I did a blog post once on spines if you are interested:

We love This Country of Ours but there are other simpler choices for second grade too.
