I know this has been dicussed a lot already…but I wondering specifically if anyone has found a spine that is somewhere between Hakim’s Story of US (middle school level?) and Bennett’s Last Best Hope (a bit over our heads a good part of the time).  I’m doing this with my 17 yo son, and we both enjoy the Bennett book to a point (Vol. 1), but struggle to process nearly every paragraph before going on to the next.  This makes it very difficult to narrate b/c our energy is spent just trying to understand and follow what’s going on.  I think it’s the fact that so many people are mentioned and we don’t get enough explanation of each – and don’t already know the people and events mentioned well enough?!  We can’t settle on one or the other (Hakim or Bennett).  The one seems too elementary and the other too advanced.  Can anyone recommend something that might work better for us??

Also, I’m wondering, does anyone know if Bennett’s second book is the same in this respect?  Or might we fare better when we get to that?

And how about going without a spine?  Who does this…and do you use another timeline type resource (Timetables of History or something??) to bridge the gap and hit on all the highlights?

    • Truthquest History recommends:

    • Story of the Thirteen Colonies and Story of the Great Republic, by H.A. Guerber (Gr. 3-7)
    • This Country of Ours and Island Story, by H.E. Marshall (Gr. 3-8)
    • Story of Liberty and Sweet Land of Liberty, by Charles Coffin (Gr. 6-12)

TruthQuest also can serve as that timeline if you just want to use living books for history. You don’t have to have a spine.

Thank you!  I’ll check these out.

We started reading Bauer’s Story of the World today – and it is perfect!!  My kids really liked it…and they are a pretty hard sell on spine type books.  I’m really leaning toward just going without on Am. Hx.  There are so MANY living books that are SO good, maybe we’ll just take advantage of the opportunity to use them more fully or even add in a few more!

We sporadically use This Country of Ours. 🙂
