DD16 will be a high school senior next year, and I am planning to complete history module 4 (Mid Ages/Ren/Ref) since it is the only module we have left in the rotation.  However, DD inquired about American history, which we studied as a family while she was in 8th & 9th grade.  She feels as though she did not get much out of that (which is possible, since we were new to CM methods and struggled a bit to get through things), and she especially feels she needs to refresh her memory of early American history.

I do not particularly want to lighten up module 4, and I don’t want to skimp on American history with my younger DD, who was in 5th grade when we started with module 5.  I would like to have DD16 read a book or two on American history, especially early AH, in addition to our regular module 4 studies.  I don’t want it to be too burdensome as she has other meaty things to complete her senior year, but I don’t know which book(s) to use.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!

I would suggest The Shaping of North America by Isaac Asimov. Dd14 is reading and narrating it and it’s been great.  You could add in audiobook or even DVD versions of David McCullough’s John Adams.  Then maybe a Landmark biography or two.  That’s is what dd is doing for 8th, but it far surpasses everything I did in high school and early college.

You know, the audiobook/dvd idea is a great one.  I forget to look for those….not sure why as we almost always used a couple per year when they all were junior high or under.  That would give her a break if it seems like there is too much history going on at once.

Thanks, I will look into the Asimov book.

@missceegee, I see that Asimov’s book is part of a 4-book series.  Have you read any of the other ones?  I’m wondering if I should try to fit in at least one or two of the other volumes.

Time for me to pick up the first one from the library and start reading!

Sue, I didn’t even know there were others! Asimov was a prolific writer in most every category in the Dewey decimal system! The first book is not long, if the others are similar you could easily add, I think.  I’m going to order the other 3 myself and let dd read one per year maybe alongside her other history. Hmmm. Time to think.
