I have decided to jump from Ancient History to American History.  I want to live history with my children this school year.  I need some suggestions, please.  I will have a 2nd and a Ker.  We used SOTW and MOH for the ancients, but I don’t know what to use for American.  I have looked at Truth Quest.  Has anyone used it?  I would appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks!

For American History, we are really enjoying SCM’s “Stories of America”. I fill in with living books from our library. “Stories of America” is a great read-aloud. Every week or two I look ahead to see what important events/people are coming up, and I make a quick run to the library. It’s really that easy (esp. for little ones the ages of your kids!)

    Enjoy your year!

    We’ve enjoyed:

    • Stories of the Pilgrims
    • Boys and Girls of Colonial Days
    • American Pioneers and Patriots
    • Eggleston’s First Book of American History and Stories of Great Americans
    • Ben and Me
    • Pedro’s Journal

I would not recommend doing all those books in one year!  We spent 3 years on American history when my older two were around those ages.

We’ll be doing Early American History this fall with my crew of eight kids(grades 7 down to a newborn). I shared our booklists on my blog. http://ourbusyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2013/01/early-american-history-books.html

They are divided into family read alouds and then books to read for grade ranges. Hope it helps!

Tristan, are you using the history guides at SCM as well?

I have made an initial book list to last our first term of 12 weeks of early American history study for my two 7yo sons. I’m incredibly excited about the wonderful books we will be reading. There are a LOT of books but we have no deadline by when we need to be finished so we’ll just keep going as long as we enjoy it – one year, two, more?

I’d be happy to share the books I’ve selected. I pulled what looks to me to be the best of the best from SCM, All Through the Ages and TruthQuest. We don’t have anything that is a spine and all the books will be read-alouds since my sons don’t read well on their own yet.
