This seems like the cheapest way to build a good collection of classical music.  Anyone have a favorite collection or series of mp3 downloads from Amazon to recommend?  I’d prefer each download to be all of one composer.  There’s so many choices it’s hard to choose!

Well, they’re not all by one composer, but the Beethoven’s Wig CDs are great for getting the main theme of “classical” works stuck in your head. I’ve come across a few that deal with halloween-type characters in the lyrics, but nothing I can’t skip over.

I’m sorry I don’t have any actual recommendations for you.

We are finishing up a study of Edward MacDowell and since I have no CDs of his music (! I have no idea why not!! I was a piano major – and he wrote beautiful piano music.) we actually streamed all of our listening from Listube and GrooveShark. It was sort of inconvenient for us (not how we usually do our listening) but it was free. And I could set up a playlist and just let it play.

These are fantastic – inexpensive, hours and hours of music for each composer, and they include complete pieces (with all the movements) rather than just the themes or most important parts the way most collection CDs do. We love them.

If you are going for inexpensive, watch ebay for a “lot” of classical cds. Also look at Goodwill and other thrift stores. Do you have any specific composer in mind? You could search ebay for that composer and I have bought used sets on Amazon for less than the mp3. Over the last years I have been collecting classical music and now have about 80 dscs. They were mostly used for a few dollars each. I had about 5 cds before. Our appreciation for this music has really grown and is a preferred choice many times. This and artist study are my favorite parts of a CM education.

Thanks to Jen for recommending the Rise of the Masters mp3. I have no Debussy and this looks like an outstanding deal! I am sure I will be adding many of these to our collection at those prices.
