We struggled with it for a couple of weeks, but it’s just not happening for us this year. My oldest is only 7, and while he does well with comprehension, this was just over his head (and mine as well since it was a bit of a struggle even for me to read it aloud). I remember reading about a possible alternative on a thread a while back, but can’t remember which one and a couple brief searches didn’t ring any bells. Help please? I would like to keep up with the full use of the guide this year but feel like I am floundering a bit at this point…

OK, I just found it Embarassed – I haven’t explored this site enough I guess, but just saw a list of replies under my member name and found it there! Sheesh, my brain is mush.

We have, but haven’t read this picture book version of his story – http://www.amazon.com/Born-Breezes-Voyages-Joshua-Slocum/dp/0439293057/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1410318892&sr=1-1&keywords=born+in+the+breezes

We read Stowaway by Karen Hesse.

We also read Stowaway as a substitute for Sailing…., and my kids enjoyed it much more. I believe they were 10, 12, and 13 at the time.
