Alternate Book for Modern Times by Paul Johnson

I am planning to have our 16 year old daughter study the 20th century, modern times in history this school year.  Ambleside recommends the book Modern Times by Paul Johnson for a good primary text, but this book is very advanced.  I would greatly appreciate some history living books ideas for this study that would make a really good replacement primary text for Johnson’s Modern Times, something very engaging and not as advanced as Johnson’s book.  It would be great if the book offers a Christian worldview as well.  Any suggestions, ideas for me?  Thanks so much!
