Can someone tell me why this book gets mixed reviews? Did you and your children like this book at all? Is it worth reading??

Anymore Civil War books that you recommend? I have a few on my list! Wanted to add this if it is good! 🙂

    Thanks!!

It’s been years since my oldest and I read this book. I remember that we enjoyed it and don’t recall anything offensive.

Have you read the 1 and 2 star reviews on Amazon?  That might give you an idea of what people don’t like.  Just glancing it looks like people complained that it was “boring.”  I would take that with a grain of salt.  😉

My children have all enjoyed it.  My fifth grader (boy) read it this past year and said it’s not gruesome.  He liked it.

Maybe you can find a sample to read online somewhere?

There is nothing offensive in this book.  However, there is a part at the beginning that may seem to drag a bit depending upon the reader.  This is one of our family’s favorite books.  It ranks right up there with Carry On, Mr. Bowditch – and that’s sayin’ something, if you’ve read anything about my views or number of times I recommend it on here. I’ll bet that if non-homeschooled, twaddle-reading, super-tv watching modern children with short attenion spans say it’s boring, then it’s probably just right.

    Yep, that sounded snobby.

And my friend, Emily, has a great Civil War list on her website. I especially enjoy the books by Merritt Parmelee Allen, Stephen Meader and We Were There.

I just happened onto this post and just stopped to say that Rachels’s comment was “just right!”  ROFLOL!!!!!!   That is the sort of comment my 15yodd would have made! (shame on me!)

I wish I could say I was entirely joking…but that’d make me a liar and that’s only slightly worse.

    What’s a girl to do?!

Hope ya’ll enjoy the book. Chime back in after reading it and let us know your opinion, please!

Thank you so much for posting, 2flowerboys, I was looking for books for the Civil War for my son who is really wanting to learn more about it.

There are stamps available honoring the Civil War.

I also am checking out from our library, “If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War” to get things started for him. 🙂

My favorite Civil War book is Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith. While this may be a little dramatic for the younger crowd, it is “just right” for middle schoolers to adults.

Another vote for Rifles for Watie!
