A little perspective please

We started 1st grade yesterday.  My ds is enjoying it but I am struggling.  I am working through the suggestions on this site and it is going well EXCEPT he is a perfectionist.  Day 1 of 106 DOC has the drawing what was created each day as I read it.  We had to stop and pick back up today because his drawings were taking him so long.  He is not dwadling he is just detailed.  Drawing is his thing but oh my goodness.  And I don’t want to stomp on his spirit because he loves it so.  Another aspect is that he has occular albinism and his eyes get tired which makes him tired.  So I talked with my husband about easing into the year with just a few things rather than my full blown plan.  Or do I contiune and just take longer each day?  Or do I encouarage him to finish faster?  Help me with perspective and a plan please.

This may settle down after a while, Amy.  Your idea of just doing a few things is a good one and one many of us do at the beginning of the year.  That might help.  Another thing–leave that drawing until LAST in the  day.  He loves it, so he’ll still do it, he can work on it later in the day also if his eyes get tired.  So move that item to last in the official school day.

I’m not the one who asked the question, but I want to say that that is a great answer.  I have a child who is quite the perfectionist and can take forever on a drawing, too.  If we do that first then we may not get to other subjects because of how long it takes him and that he feels rushed if I want to move on.  He doesn’t like the idea of working on it again tomorrow, but wants the time to finish it right now, ugh.  So, doing that last would work because then he’d have the rest of the afternoon to accomplish it and no one waiting on him to finish.

Whew!  That took a lot to get out:)
