Ok ladies, I just wanted to list a basic what my 9th grader will have accomplished for his HS 9th grade year.  Please let me know if you see something I missed, or ask if you want to know when I am going to be doing something.  Mind you we school 3/4 of a year per say.. LOL

    Math – MUS Alegra 1 (1 credit)

Science – Apologia:Biology & Enviormental Science (both full year courses) *no labs (2 credits)

PE – A full year credit with books, movies and learning about sports (we don’t like or do sports so we felt like a boy should            have this knowledge, at least enough to understand the basics of sports) (1 credit)

Logic – Using the 2 Bluedorn books and The Art of Arguement (??? .5 credit???)

Drivers ED – Doing a complete course approved by our state at home.  (.5 credit) This would be an elective correct?

Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey for HS – (?? need to look up how much I can count this for) What do I do for this as far as             labling for transcripts? Math? Business? Both?

Grammar – We’ll call it 9th grade English – Grammar Key, vocabulary, spelling, copywork, narration (1 credit)

Economics – All the Richard Maybury books plus Ecominics in One Lesson & Ecconomics has Consequences by Compass                    Cinema(.5 credits)

Keyboarding – this is going to be one of those that he works on every year so I figure 1/4 credit a year with 1 full credit in keyboarding/typing.  Does that seem fair or not giving enough?

Foreign Language – Visual Latin 1 – (1 credit) & ASL 1/4 credit a year (w/ 4 years as we work on this all the time as a family) (1 credit) 2 credits total for languages

Fine Arts – Another one over the 4 years we do as a family.  Covering Poetry, Picture, Composer and art.  He had to read some specific books on each subject and he is watching The Great Courses: Fine Arts & Music: Museum Masterpieces by Brettell.  1 credit total for the 4 years

Religious – Working through a study of our catholic faith (1 credit) What would you lable this as?

OK.. that looks like a lot.  But what do you think?  Missing, need, don’t forgets, etc?

    Thanks Misty

Are you including literature and composition (beyond or perhaps through narration) in you English credit, it doesn’t specify but these are usually looked for in English by colleges?

Are you going to cover any history in 9th? Economics is usually a senior course with world geography, world history, and American history in the previous years (typically one full credit per year is what colleges look for).

I would label your religious studies just that. That is what our parochial schools do.

    Driver’s Ed, yes, elective.

I wouldn’t worry about knowing sports if your son isn’t interested, it might be just as beneficial if he did an in-depth study on something he likes and is active in, perhaps cycling or rock climbing?

I would label Financial Peace as Life Management Skills and add in other things such as basic home maintenance, cooking, cleaning, first aid, CPR, etc.

Looks good otherwise and really not too heavy.

I also I was wondering about all the things he does extra like he works for a farmer, he fixes weed whippers/lawn mowers, he is quite a handyman around the house fixing anything really, he has a 2 days a week he does all the cooking (plus helps on other days), takes care of our corn stove (heats our house) loves archery and rifle shooting.

Thanks CNP! 1st the things I just mentioned would you just add them to the Life Management Skills you mentioned and do more than 1 credit for the 4 years?  English – yes he reads some great literature books which I just included in my English lable (6 a year not including family/audio/etc)!  History – well I had the economic books so we did that cause we we had them already.  I am working on a US/World history w/ government for a 2 year 10-11th grade program (1 credit each world/US and 1/2-1 credit government).

    Thanks for your input!

If he does archery and rifle shooting that might be able to count towards Phys ed….

Yes, I would add those to LMS. The number of credits should depend on the number of hours or words. Remember that it used to be common for students to take four years of home ec or shop, learning new or advancing skills each year. So just divide content as you see fit. Also, there is no requirement that all hours for a credit occur in the same year; that’s just convenient for schools. Additionally, when you get to the end of high school you can always combine credits on a transcript that is too lengthy for college purposes and there is nothing that says your child can’t have more than the 24-28 credits a ps graduate would have.

I agree with suzukimom, archery and rifle shooting are sports, just make sure you get the minimum hours if you choose to go that way; in fact one of my high school PE credits was archery. They are also Olympic sports.
