Theups1 ParticipantWhat should make up English for a 4th grader?
2Corin57 ParticipantWe’ll be doing grammar, spelling, copywork, narration moving into dictation and of course read read read!
Theups1 ParticipantWhat will you be using for grammar?
Melanie32 ParticipantCharlotte Mason didn’t cover formal grammar until her students were a bit older so many of us have chosen to go the same route. I teach the basic parts of speech in elementary school and save formal grammar for middle school.
Karen Smith ModeratorOur The Natural Progression of Language Arts video may be helpful to you in deciding what to do with your 4th grade student.
florencia76 ParticipantHave you looked into Using Language Well/Spelling Wisdom? We have been very happy with it this year.
Rachel White ParticipantYour child could read the Ruth Heller Explore series
It depends on your child; two ideas:
Growing with Grammar, from the beginning, if you have a child which responds well to their style (mine have very well)
Writing Tales Level 1 (it already has copywork):
Junior Analytical Grammar
Start Latin
For a completely “living” book style of teaching, use Grammarland as an introduction to the basics (mine enjoyed it):

Simply Grammar
Intermediate Language Lessons (is more comprehensive than just grammar) Has guides to go with them, some with consumable textbks, from a variety of sources (Lost Classics; http://www.intermediatelanguagelessons.com/; Living Books Press ; My Father’s World )
Another comprehensive one: English Lessons through Literature
