I am trying to put the “finishing touches” on what I’ll use for my son who is 9 and in third grade.  I am interested in the Hymns in Prose offered through SCM.  My son expressed an interest in spelling (wanting to be like his 13 year old sister).  I was thinking about Spelling Wisdom for him and maybe switching my daughter from Spelling Power to that as well, getting rid of spelling lists really appeals to me.  My concern is he’s not an avid writer.  Spelling is covered in Hymns in Prose.  There will be some writing in Science and History, but I know I can do some of that orally through narration.  What do you think?  Too much?  Try it and See? I am still trying to develop a “love of learning” for him, so I don’t want to overload with writing since that’s one of his least favorite things to do.  Just curious what others might think.  My daughter didn’t have the I don’t like to write bug, so I’m hoping for some insight.

    Thanks!

I have a rising 3rd grader too, but he just turned 8 last month, so this might or might not relate to your 9 yo ds.

I am planning to use PLL this year and do the majority of it orally, sticking with copywork and the dictation in PLL for writing. That is, I don’t plan on starting written narrations this year. I’m waiting for 4th grade to start that.  He is a natural spelling and grammar comes very easily to him, though he may not always understand the grammar rules, he knows what sounds and looks right becasue he is an excellent reader.  I feel he just needs a solid year of good oral narrations (which were just starting to develope at the end of 2nd) before moving into written.  By then I hope that he will have figured out that he really does have a lot to say, and it’s so much more interesting to write when you have something to really say.

Is your son an avid reader?  I find that usually being an avid reader comes first.  Finding a topic to write about that interests him is your challenge.  My older ds is an avid reader, but his dysgraphia makes writing a very difficult chore for him.  I have ILL that I plan to use with him this year, but I will be limiting his written assignments to one a week so we can really polish.  I don’t plan on using the whole book.
