I’m sorry if my wording sounded critical. I used curriculum for years with our older children with great fear, frustration, fatigue, and failure. Basically, it’s been freeing to be able to simply have our youngest enjoy learning with the Bible, living books, and outdoor play. My point was that, especially on a tight budget, you should never feel like you won’t be providing enough if living books and nature study are all that are available for science (any subject really). In all honesty, our older children require more time and instruction (read conversation and lengthy discussion) which leaves very little time for me to devote to a curriculum for her. So, we read books together and she shares her joy with all of us when a seed grows in the garden, puppies are born, leaves and flowers bloom, tadpoles are caught….the list goes on.

Please know that if a guide works for you, I admire you for being able to stick to it and enjoy it with your children. I’m intimidated by them, quite frankly because I can’t seem to decide to delete what won’t work for us and not feel like I’m failing. Living books let me off the hook until later when more serious studies are taking place.

I pray we all feel comfortable with where God leads each of us and our families on this journey. I hope to be more careful with my wording from now on as I truly only mean to encourage each person on this forum. I’ve always enjoyed the varied opinions and graceful way in which they are shared.

    Blessings,

@Becca – Just read that article. Somehow it always makes me feel better to have permission from other people who’ve “been there, done that”, lol.  I admit that reading some threads about high school science scare me!  Labs! Reports! More Labs! Big Intimidating Textbooks! And yet, I don’t want to short-change my kiddos.  (Then I think back to my high school science classes and think maybe the lower Apologia texts teach more detail than I remember from them! lol) To each his own – I am grateful that the Lord leads me in the direction that is best for my CHILD’s needs. I know they are getting an education suited for their purposes on earth, in spite of me and my mistakes. 😉  BTW, thank you for your kind words on the TOC thread. Glad that you found it helpful. =)

TailorMade, I really enjoyed that article! Thanks so much for posting here. I’m currently planning Year 4 for my oldest and was really struggling with what to do for science- living books work so well for us, and I was so worried that I’d kill our joy of learning with them by using a guide w/worksheets and canned questions, yet I am not scientifically inclined and worried I’d leave too much out of a rigorous science education.

I’m going to stick with the living books, nature shows, and field trips. We are all enjoying that so much these days!

This being my first year and all I too feel the need for a guide and lesson plans. We are almost done with 106 days of creation and it has been wonderful. I love getting all the books together and it feels so much more real than doing a text book. That along with nature study has been great. With apologia….we want to use them but not until ds is out of the elementary phase. I’m stuck on what to move onto next year since I feel the need to have the lessons already laid out for me…that is until I feel more secure with trusting myself to put it together. Any ideas as to what I should move onyo next?

Also I love anything put together by Ken Ham and love the answers in genesis curriculum as well but don’t feel my son would be into the text book style just yet although I use his resources a lot and look up to him and what he is doing for our kids. We are planning a trip to the creation museum in June!
