As most of you know by now I am bringing my 15 year old daughter home from PS this year. She has taken Algebra 1. I was going to use LOF with her which gets pretty good reviews from Cathy Duffys sight.  Just wondering if anyone could recommend any other options. and is it standard in the homeschool world to follow algebra 1 with Geometry?

    Thanks!

If she will be taking testing that requires geometry before the end of 11th grade, you might consider geometry after Alg 1. But other than that it is up to you. We used VideoText Algebra which combines Alg 1 and Alg 2 so we follow that with geometry. If you use a geometry program that integrates algebra throughout it helps so the student stays sharp with both subjects.

I haven’t actually done this yet but I was thinking that when the kids get to that age I would use the “Key To….” books to supplement FRED if necessary.    I have also heard really good things about Jacobs Algebra and Geometry, but have never used them.  My oldest used Saxon all the way through high school and that did not work well for us.

Thanks again for your thoughts! I know I am just going to have to jump in and use something, I just don’t like the idea of jumping curriculums from year to year until you find what works. We used Key to series…years ago as supplemental.  We really liked them but they almost seemed to easy but with LOF they may be perfect.

Hidden jewel-i have heard that it is good to use a course that combines geometry and algebra. When I researched that years ago I remember thinking maybe DIVE Math does that(I can’t really remember, I wasn’t really there yet). Do you know of courses that do that?

I really need to simplify as much as possible, I am getting way overwhelmed.  I’m thinking I will follow SCM curriculum guide to a T for my littles and just focus on my olders.  This is getting way complicated. And deciding on Literature for them to read is killing me. I don’t even know where to begin but thats a whole other post 🙂

Thanks. Y’all are so kind and helpful!

Jacobs Geometry incorporates algebra review throughout. VideoText Geometry uses algebra in their lessons.

I have not used DIVE Math (Saxon) just DIVE Science. I do think I have heard that geometry is included in the Saxon algebra program and a separate geometry program is not used.

@HiddenJewel, where do you find VideoText Geometry? Can you share a link? Thanks!

I have to say that we abandoned VideoText Geometry about 5 modules in. But a large part of that was because I am weak in geometry and dd was weak in geometry. She was learning the concepts though.

    Still like their algebra though.
