Play-Based Learning
Your student continues to enjoy looking at art, making crafts, listening to music, reading poems, playing outdoors, finding nature friends, hearing tales and rhymes, singing songs, accomplishing chores, reading great books, playing games, exploring math concepts, and more, as the activities in Our Preschool Life are specifically leveled up or down to gently challenge and encourage your five-year-old. Chapter books may also be added for you to read to your child.
Reading
Once your student is familiar with the letters and the sounds they represent, the next step is to put the letters together to form words. The multi-sensory games and activities in Delightful Reading, Level 2: Words I Can Build teach your child basic phonics and guide her into the delightful world of building and reading words. Allow your child to progress at her own pace.
If your child does not yet know the letters and the sounds they represent, take a look at the reading recommendations for preschool. If she can already read several hundred long- and short-vowel words, including some with blends, check the Reading recommendations for first grade. The beauty of homeschooling is that you can easily customize skill-progressive subjects (especially language arts and math) to fit each unique child.
Handwriting
Printing is introduced, encouraging your child to learn a stroke or two and then the letters that can be made with those strokes. The short handwriting lessons move your Kindergartener from using her large muscles and writing with her finger in a pan of rice or sand to using her small muscles (fine motor skills) and writing with a pencil on paper. The Delightful Handwriting teacher book and copybook guide this gentle process.
Math
The math activities in Our Preschool Life are leveled up or down to best reflect your child’s progress in understanding math concepts and developing critical thinking skills. If your child is ready for even more challenge, take a look at the Math recommendations for first grade.
