Perhaps this isn’t the prime time of the year to talk about resolutions. Usually resolutions are discussed around New Year’s Day. However, it is homeschool convention season, and many good resolutions are made at conventions too.
You hear a workshop that resonates with your heart and you grab hold of an attractive idea with both hands. You decide that you are ready; you will make that change that has been naggling in the back of your mind for a while now. During the meal break you catch yourself imagining what your home might look like with that change in place. In fact, you may even formulate an action plan to be put into effect as soon as you return home.
Then you go to sleep with a smile on your face and dream of all the good that this change will do. An element of peace comes when you have finally made the decision. You are resolved. You are committed. Life is good.
And that’s the dangerous moment.
Power Comes By Doing
Deciding to make a change is an important step, but you can’t stop there. The danger comes when you rest on that good feeling indefinitely.
Good feelings and good resolutions accomplish nothing by themselves. You must put the decision into practice. You must do.
Charlotte Mason stated it this way: “We must not amuse ourselves with the notion that we have done something when we have only formed a good resolution. Power comes by doing and not by resolving” (Vol. 4, Book 1, pp. 208, 209).
Take heart; making the decision is a crucial part of the process. Making the decision can take a lot of effort. You’re past that part now! The danger lies in mistakenly thinking that deciding to change is the only thing you have to do.
You have caught the vision. Good! Your imagination can picture the idea at work in your life. Wonderful! You may even have an action plan. Fabulous!
Now roll up your sleeves and get to work. That’s when you’ll feel the power of your good resolution!
“Power comes by doing and not by resolving.”
