My son,12, is needing a good book for his downtime. For those of you with boys, what are they enjoying?
BTW, my son is an average level reader. I prefer to give him “less challenging” books for his relaxing alone time, but I still want him to have something worthwhile.
suzukimomParticipantMaybe the Redwall series? (if you don’t mind a touch of animorphism… kind of a medival setting with the characters being mice, rats, etc)
simple homeMemberThat sounds interesting Suzukimom. I will look into it for him.
I just came across The Borrowers by Mary Norton. Would a boy like that? My son is in a house full of girls, so I need help in distinquishing certain books for him. At his age, he really wants to read his own “boy” related books and feel more manly. 🙂
suzukimomParticipantI have only read the first in the series…. but a young mouse becomes a great hero when the Rats try to take over the monestary / neighbourhood where he lives.
csmammaParticipantIf your son likes adventure & knights, how about the Kingdom Series by Chuck Black? My boys loved these!! The Door Within Trilogy by Wayne Thomas Batson is also highly esteemed by them. Oh and the unforgettable Narnia series by C.S. Lewis – as recommended in SCM literature modules.
Missy OHParticipantMy Side of the Mountain
City of Ember Series
Mars Diaries by Sigmund Brouwer
Homer Price
simple homeMemberHow come I haven’t heard of half of these books you all suggested? I’m SO glad I asked!! 🙂
It’s hard having one boy, my attention goes towards all my girls’ books and things much of the time, unintentionally of course.
I need all you moms of boys to steer me in the right direction. Thank you for helping! I wish my son could be personal friends with your guys. 🙂
suzukimomParticipantI second My Side of the Mountain!
sherazParticipantAnother one that he would like if you can find it is the Rupert Piper series. They are similiar to Homer Price. I also think that he might enjoy the Indian in the Cupboard series – there is at least 5.
TristanParticipantWe are loving Peter and the Starcatchers right now. It is the first in a series that tells what came before Peter Pan. There are 4 books.
momtomanyParticipantDefinitely “My Side of the Mountain” by Jean Craighead George. In the same series is “On the Far Side of the Mountain” and “Frightful’s Mountain”
“Where the Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls
Gary Paulsen’s “Hatchet” series… “Hatchet”, “Brians’s Return”, “Brian’s Winter”, “The River”, “Brian’s Hunt” (probably not in that order)
Gary Paulsen’s “Mr. Tucket” series… “Mr. Tucket”, “Call Me Francis Tucket”, “Tucket’s Ride”, “Tucket’s Gold”, “Tucket’s Home” (in that order), but don’t let him read these to himself…. read them aloud to him because they are THAT GOOD… I was always waiting for the end of the day so I could find out what happens next! Our library didn’t even have this series, but I interlibrary loaned them and eventually bought the ‘1-5 books in one volume’ (because I’ll want to read them to his 3 younger brothers too)
“Indian in the Cupboard” by Lynn Reid Banks… also in the series: “Return of the Indian”, “The Secret of the Indian”, “The Mystery of the Cupboard”, “The Key to the Indian” (probably not in that order)…. these were also a great hit and hard to put down.
simple homeMemberHe read Side of the Mountain last year. It was very good. He also read the Hatchet series, but I didn’t know the author had another series.
I think my son will be so happy with all of the suggestions. Yay! Now I don’t have to rack my brain trying to find something. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Karen SmithModeratorIf he enjoys Where the Red Fern Grows, he may enjoy Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls.
Also, try Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons.
nerakrParticipantHas he read Old Yeller yet (Fred Gipson)? There’s also a series of dog books by Jim Kjelgaard. One of the titles is Big Red. I don’t know if they have to be read in a certain order.
The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara (main character is a boy despite the recent movie adaptation)
Henry Reed Inc. by Keith Robertson (may be a little young, but worth a try)
LindseyDParticipantOur ds is enjoying the Silver Chief series right now.
Hatchet and other books by Gary Paulson also come to mind.
