HI! About 10 families in our area will be cooping doing weekly nature study and spanish. I really would love some ideas on how to facilitate group nature study and whar that could look like. Our rough idea is for the moms to take turns picking a location within 15 min. from the building we will be using and perhaps picking a focus. We’ll meet at the chosen locwlation then walk for an hour then we will meet at the building and do spanish and various public speaking things. I really would love to know if there is any sort of curriculum for nature study and from those who have done thus in group or just have ideas! Thank you so very much!! Jen

Not sure if you have discovered the “outdoor hour challenge” blog by Barb McCoy. ( it mat be titled the handbook of nature study blog as that is what pops up in the subject line of my e-mails) You may want to check it out if you need some extra help with nature study. We are using it as our main science.

I can explain what exactly it is. It’s a blog that you subscribe to, she picks a topic every month & sends out a newsletter type e-mail at the beginning of each month that correlates to the topic , she typically has the “grid” which is your hands on ideas to do ( you check off a square in the grid when you have completed that challenge or task). She also sends out weekly e-mails with corresponding notebooking pages. This month the topic is the night sky & constellations which means the outdoor portion is at night .. Last month was fish – which meant your outdoor portion would be at lakes, rivers or ponds etc.

It helped me tremendously to have someone else pick the topic and the grid & newsletter are a great tool. We usually get a few books at the library as soon as we find out what that Month’s topic is.

Again, not sure if this is something that you were looking for. Hopefully you are able to find something that will work for you.

We’re adding nature study to our CM co-op this coming year. Because of our location we will bring in specimens frequently. We have 30 families and 65 kids, so we need to stay put. We meet 12 weeks per term. We will focus on different things for 4 weeks. 3 lessons on vines and them a nature walk on church property the 4th week. Then 3 lessons on __, 4th a nature walk and so on.

Certainly not the only way or even the best way, but it is the way that works best for our situation.
