What have others done with the little ones like 3yr – 4 yr who REALLY want to learn. Want to be doing something like there older siblings?
Other than singing the ABC’s, counting etc. Are you using anything, following anything or just doing whatever to keep them busy while you are with the other children?
I have a just turned 3yr old who wants to do something everyday. We read books, we color, we play but he is like me and wants something tangable. Anyone else have one of those out there?
With my 3 year old, she has her own “school stuff” that she uses only when we do school. Her math is Pattern Blocks and sheets and rods and base ten blocks, she practices her “writing” with crayons and paper. She likes being a part of picture study and gives her own imput, but leaves the room during poetry and literature, for now — her choice. Since I only have two children, they want to stay together; so we end up doing school together even though it is just really for my oldest, Juliette. We listen very quietly while she practices her reading out loud, this “quiet listening” is the hardest thing…still!
I’ve been doing something called Hands on Homeshcooling. Its not really Charlotte Masonish. But it gives 3 activities a day to do whether it be tracing lines or tossing bean bags or whatever. Its kinds just all there planned out for you. There is a bible verse to memorize each month and it comes with sticker charts andactivities etc. I love it for hte little ones. It helps them just get into a little routine and helps them learn to memorize and mostly works coordination. Its nothing you couldn’t design yourself and save the money. I just liked having it planned out for me. I’m using the 2’s curriculum and the 3’s curriculum. I find my kids are advanced for some of it and then some of its too hard so I have to work around it anyways. But its a nice idea to start with and its not too too pricey.
I let my 3-yr-old do science experiments and he does whatever science coloring page/project we’re doing. Same for history. He listens in on all our books including the phonics/spelling instruction. He also does art with his older brothers. He does have his own time with me and he’s staring workboxes too, which he absolutely loves. My now 5-yr-old apparently learned to read at 4 by listening to his older brothers. And he knows a lot of “stuff” that most 5-yr-olds don’t know – little ones have big ears!
Each child is so different though that what one 3-yr-old might be ready for, another is far from. And mine goes back and forth depending on the day too!
Have you looked into Before Five in a Row? The idea is to read the same book five days in a row, and do a different activity based on some aspect of the book…maybe math, history, art, or whatever. Most of the books are available from the library. My oldest is 4 and we have lessons every day. I plan about 45 min-hour of activities for us to do together M-Th…a lot of reading, Bible stories, working on alphabet and numbers, art projects, nature walks and projects, etc. I am a planner, so it helps me a lot to make a plan for the day. If it gets disrupted, no big deal…but at least you have something to work from! He has shown a lot of enthusiam for lesson time every day. Hope this helps!
