    When they start narrating by building stories and scenes out of Legos;

    When they use words like “tiresome” and “solemnly promise” in play and normal conversation;

    When they insist on reading at the table during mealtimes–which isn’t allowed;

    When they ask to give an oral narration to the homeschool group – with no notes or anything written down!

    Lindsey – you don’t allow reading at the table during mealtimes? I do know that it’s not proper, but we do it here at one meal each day.  Embarassed That’s the only time my husband is sitting down and not sleeping (he’s a farmer, so he’s on the go all the time).  So he reads his diary publications;  I read his dairy magazines or a book I’m in the middle of .  Our girls read (or look at) whatever book they choose. Often, we read things aloud to each other – funny things (the comics), bad things (newspaper), interesting things (Dairy mags.).

    Do you think it’s a serious thing? Like we ought to stop? We don’t read when company’s with us.

    @Karen, I don’t think it’s wrong for your family if you don’t! 😉 Honestly, my main reason for not allowing it is because I don’t want sticky or greasy hands/fingers ruining our precious books–some of which are rare, out of print, or cost me quite a bit of money. For example, I have a hardback collection of vellum-bound Louisa May Alcott books from 1911–which my ds frequently tries to get away with reading at the table. Sorry, buddy, but those books are irreplaceable, and you’re welcome to read them any time your hands are clean and there’s not a liquid nearby.

    My second reason is less materialistic and more for manners. I just enjoy us being face to face and having conversation at mealtimes. My husband comes home for lunch almost daily, so we are blessed to have two meals a day as a family.

    It’s not up to me to say your kids shouldn’t read at the table. If you’re fine with it, so am I!

    I was making a pie the other week, and my six year old asked, “what type of pie are you making? …a Charlotte Mason pie?” (in a teasing tone)

    🙂  Thanks, Lindsey.  I think my husband and I allow it because we both LOVE reading – but he lacks time (he falls asleep when he sits down – we don’t watch movies without eating while we’re watching them, either.) and me just because there’s nothing better than feeding your soul and mind and your body all at the same time.

    back to the regularly scheduled program…….. (I’m sorry for the minor hijack.)

    When they ask if others are working on certain habits as wellWink

    When they engage an adult in conversation about topics that they can relate too.

    When the SECOND you get into the car they BEG you to turn back on the audio book (currently Charlies Choice by Lamplighter Theatre).

    When you beam at every one of their accomplishments and revel in the fact that God has blessed you to witness every single one!

    Lovinlife, we have had  the “turn on the story, mom!” every time we get in the car lately.  We were listening to Freckles – and it was so gripping at the end.  We finally brought it into the house to finish today (while working on handicrafts) because we couldn’t stand the torture of waiting until we go to town next! *L*

    Next up for us (in the car) is The Story Girl by L.M. Montgomery.

    When your kids figure out that asking to watch a movie before school is always a “no” but if they ask to play outside I will almost always say yes and let them until they are done. Even if that means starting school later than planned.

    I know this thread was from last week, but my five year old made me laugh aloud when I was heading to the library sale with my three year old.  As I was pulling out of the driveway, my son ran to the porch to say good-bye, followed by “Find some good books, Mom!  I hope it’s not just all twaddle!”
