That’s wonderful! I’m so inspired! I don’t think I’ll get through Nature Deficit Disorder before it’s due back at the library but I’ve read enough to appreciate getting “out there”. 🙂
Oh, you gotta have splash pants! Here are the first few options I found when I googled them. Ours are an eclectic mix of hand-me-downs, so I can’t specifically recommend any one brand. They are usually made out of similar material to rain jackets.
I’m in Canada, so some of these links might not help those of you who aren’t, but you can get the idea. If you are in Canada, I’ve never been disappointed with anything from MEC.
We wear ours with the elastic bottoms over the boots, so the water doesn’t run off of the pants and straight into the boots. If you just sat in a puddle for a while, the water would seep in (at least the versions we have, better ones might not) but they do keep the kids dryer than without, and they also keep the mud out!
Don’t forget about the joys of umbrellas too! My kids always want to go out in the rain, just so they can use umbrellas. Unfortunately, around here rain is usually accompanied by cold wind, so we don’t often stay out for long. Fortunately we aren’t in an overly rainy city.
We do if no thunder or lightning. It rains here all winter, so we have to go out in the rain (or I might go crazier LOL!). 🙂 We keep “swishy” pants (you know the track pant kind) in the garage. They wear them multiple times before I wash. 🙂 We also have rain boots for the littles (tar jay is the best place around here; they clearance them out and we get several sizes in the navy blue each year for less than $5 a pair; navy color works for boys or girls).
Shoes aren’t allowed in our house anyway, so it really doesn’t make much of a mess. As for bathing, our boys get a shower most every night (if they didn’t that morning), but a little mud can be washed off the face and hands easily enough. 🙂
Kids need to play in the rain and mud. Totally agreed! I’m so glad my Mom let me, and I can’t imagine not allowing our children to do that.
We live on a farm so we all have nasty boots/shoes/clothes. And the mud? I’ll make someone a real deal if there’s none where you are. :). There’s enough at the barn to go around.
