For those who have purchased the YC’s deal for $99 – what do you think?  I hesitate because quite a few are available for free on gutenberg or other free sites…yet, from other posts, it seems that people like it…trying to decide…

    Thanks!

Oh, and I should add that I do own a Kindle, which I love and use daily…

The TOS Homeschool Crew reviewed Yesterday’s Classics last year (which is how I got the books).  You can read all 97 of those reviews HERE

I’ll share my reasons for liking YC:

I took some time comparing free versions of some of these books online to the Yesterday’s Classics files to see if there were differences in formatting and ease of use.  There were differences in format sometimes, the Yesterday’s Classics files all look beautiful while many of the free versions have not been formatted well for Kindle, with weird spacing, missing words, etc.  The other big difference I noticed is that the Table of Contents in each book from Yesterday’s Classics is linked.  The third perk to purchasing from Yesterday’s Classics is the time savings.  I did not have to search for all of these titles individually and download 225 different files.  I only had to download 13 zip files.

    I don’t have the Yesterday’s Classics deal (wish I did…)

But one thing on the differences…..

I downloaded the book “An Island Story” – I think from Project Gutenburg (but I do use various sites so might have been another free source….)

Everytime the name Caeser was printed, it was messed up (because of the special ae character that is actually in the name….) – it would be something like C3ser or C@SER or something similar to that.  Annoying!

So, from Amazon I downloaded the sample of the book from Yesterday’s Classics.  Caeser was done correctly, the font was a little nicer, the table of contents worked, I think it had the little marks on the progress bar for each chapter, and it had a couple of pictures that the free version didn’t have. (not that that book has many pictures to begin with.)  And it didn’t have a few other typos the free one had.

So – the quality MIGHT be nicer than the free books.  And as Tristan said, it is time savings.

I’ve loved using the books we ordered from yesterday’s classics – for people on a really tight budget, there’s probably better ways to spend, but for us – it seemed like a LOT of books for a great price and we put some extra Christmas money toward it, so it was really a good value.

Ya’ll are making me cry…Cry (ok, so I’m probably coveting); I so adore YC books (and Heritage History) and am increasingly convinced that I may have to ask a relative to get us a Kindle for some Holiday coming up.

I, too, want a Kindle.  I’m saving my pennies.  In the long run I think it’ll save even more pennies.
