I’ve read from the AO facebook page several parents very much pleased with the Yesterday’s Classic package (now on sale for $99 for 225 books, many which are used in living books curriculums such as AO). http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/o/offer.php this is the link that was posted to the package with the price good through the end of Jan.
I have Christmas money still left to spend and am considering this since the reviews are that even though the books can be found free online to download to e readers elsewhere, the way these books are formatted, the illustrations, and bthe ease of use (eg: table of contents in which you can click on the chapters) is FABULOUS. I’m wondering if any of you have purchased this and if you love it.
My dilemna is that we have an off brand e reader we were given as a gift a year ago. I just started using it (downloading books from Gutenburg’s site) and it is working out fine. But almost every review about this e reader online is terrible, and states after a few months the e reader stops working. So, I am leary to invest in a $99 book collection to put on an e reader that has a reputation of breaking down. Also, I don’t want to spend money on a Kindle or other e reader while I currently have one that works. While I need dh to look over the web link to make sure I understand it right (I’m not good with understanding computer files and downloads), it may be that the once the files are downloaded to the computer, they stay on the computer in addition to the ereader, so I can later download the collection to another ereader if our current one stops working. If that is true, I may buy the package.
Just curious of other’s advice about this collection.
I actually just broke down and bought this this weekend after eyeing it for awhile. I had downloaded a handful of the books individually, and so decided to go ahead and download the whole collection, especially since we are going overseas and I thought it would be useful to have the whole “library” at hand. I’ve actually found a few things in there that have been interesting to me beyond the scope of using it for school (I’ve been reading a biography of Queen Victoria this weekend that has been very interesting.=) The formatting of the books is much better than most of the freebies out there (linked TOC, illustrations, etc), so I would agree that it would be worth it. Once you make your payment for the collection, they send you the links with all the files to download to your computer, so yes you would have the files available on your computer to transfer to another ereader if something happened to yours. You could also view the files directly on the computer using the free Kindle for PC program that you can download from Amazon. So, you wouldn’t lose the books if something happened to your reader. (Just make sure you back up the hard drive on your computer just in case something happens to that…..
Yes, once you own the collection you can move it to multiple devices, so it won’t matter if you switch ereaders later. I currently have some books on two different ereaders (one for school, one for free reading) as well as on my phone (books I’m prereading to decide if/when to use them.)
