I noticed in the sample curriculum schedule for Year 1 it has poetry down for one day a week. Does that mean read one poem per week and a different one every week? (I know to stick with one poet per term).
We have a poetry book that we read 1-2 poems out of per week (at one sitting). We do multiple poets throughout terms 1 & 3 and pick one poet to study more during term 2. 🙂
In the past, we’ve scheduled poetry 1-3 times per week. We’ll read about 1-6 poems depending on the length (new poems each time although I’ll repeat some from the previous years). We often read from Favorite Poems Old and New by Helen Ferris or Ambleside Online’s Year 1 poetry selections (which are arranged by season/month). I have a few other books we read from, but these are our favorites and have tons of poems to choose from.
We also do a poet study at some time during the year (usually during the winter when we have a bit more time for school). During that time, I’ll just read poems from a specific poet and we’ll read a bit about that poet. If you pick up a collection of their works, there is usually a short biography in the book and we read that once during the study. Poetry For Young People is a great (and inexpensive) series for these studies.
We sometimes have a tea time during our poetry studies, but sometimes we just spend a few minutes reading them.
I just keep our poetry book by the breakfast table and read from it at breakfast or lunch time. We have done now we are six and when we were very young
