Hi! I’m halfway through year one with my 6 year old daughter and I’m hoping for some reading advice. I read most of the books aloud and she reads one book to me aloud. I would like to encourage her to read chapter books for free independent reading but I’m not sure what books to start with. I would like to avoid typical early chapter books and giver her something worth reading but I’m not sure what to suggest between Winnie the Pooh and more advanced reads like Peter Pan. She is a confident reader but if stretched too far might skip words or worse grow weary of reading. Any titles that are age appropriate and the the right reading level are appreciated. Thank you!

My son LOVED all of the Little Bear and Frog and Toad books. We still talk about them and he is 12! Are those the kind of early chapter books you want to avoid? You could check the bookfinder on this site, or Memoria Press, Ambleside, Beautiful Feet Books, Sonlight, for age appropriate literature. Honey for a Child’s Heart is a wonderful list of age appropriate books. I have been using that for 12 years.

Thank you CrystalN. We love Frog and Toad and Little Bear too! My daughter is ready for more of a challenge. I have seen many chapter books series that are about Pinkalicious and such things and I want to avoid those because the writing is so dumbed down. The pretty covers are very eye catching to a 6 year old at the library so I’m hoping to go ready to steer her to some other options.

That is a hard reading level. Try The Bears of Hemlock Mountain and The courage of Sarah Nobel. My children also really liked Alice and jerry readers at that level try the grade 2 or 3 ones. Like Neighbors on the Hill and Friendly Village. The stories are interesting and sweet. Neighbors on the hill is particularly fun. It is all about life on a farm in the country….making maple syrup, warching birds hatching ectra. Ooohh. What about Mill Molly Mandy. Or the Boxcar Children. Oh Homer Price is great. Mr. Poppers Penguins. Not sure if those are the reading level, but they are great stories!

I agree my daughter is probably at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level but the content of those books isn’t always appropriate for a 6 year old. Thank you got the recommendations I’m looking them up!

CrystalN the Milly Molly Mandy books look right up her alley. Do you know if the storybook contains the same stories and the sets with multiple books? I googled around and couldn’t find an answer.

<i>A Toad for Tuesday by Erickson </i>is a little more than a “first chapter book”.
We enjoyed the American Girl Molly books as free reads. I have not read all the American girl books, so I can’t make a sweeping recommendation for those, but guess many others would be fine too.
Freddy the Pig books. We love these! You may want to pre-read to see if this works for your family. They are very “human” ; that is to say there is not always appropriate conduct and some mild language, but we found it a nice introduction to realistic view of the world. Of course wrong behaviors are not promoted in the book, but just as a part of a normal narrative of characters interacting. Again, just see if it is right for your family.
