    Hi!

I am just starting Year 1 with my soon to be 6 year old boy (using SCM curriculum). My question is, I have a 3.5 yr old girl and I am unsure whether to wait on some of the books (ex. Burgess Bird book, Paddle by the Sea, etc) until she is closer to 5 so I can read them to both kids at the same time or if I should read them with my son now and then again with my daughter when she is a little older. I am wanting to group my kids together as much as possible, so didn’t know if I should wait on doing some books and/or subjects until my daughter is 6 and my son is 8. Or if that would be holding my son back on a broad education.

IMO the Burgess Bird book is pretty challenging for year 1. My oldest is in year 1 this year and I tried reading the Burgess Bird Book to all my kids and it tanked pretty well! We will try it again later.

I think for your literature readings you should try to keep in mind books that will appeal to both kids. For science/history readings, target your DS and let your preschooler tag along or not. My 2 year old often gets a table activity while we are doing read alouds. Today she mentioned something from a literature reading probably a month ago that she remembered! There are a lot of great picture books for science that both your kids would enjoy. We like Bumblebee at Apple Tree Lane and Miss Rumphius especially.
