I’m quite the early planner, as I’m already planning for first grade and DD is just turning 4 this summer :-D. I need to have things researched and set in my head, let alone start looking for books and things.
Anyway, I”m trying to make sense of the curriculum guide, without getting overwhelmed. For 1st grade, am I correct that we do either 106 Days OR the Outdoor Secrets? It looks like they’re listed kind of as an either/or, but I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to be doing both.
Yes, you do either one not both. I wound up choosing Outdoor Secrets b/c I have an almost 3yo I plan to include as she cooperates/wants to & thought that one made sense since it is little stories with activities you can add. I figured she would like the stories. The 106 DOC looks great too, & I’m excited to do that one too but it seems that it will work well as they get a little older too so might do that in 1-2 years as the 3yo gets more able to participate & grasp the concepts. I know that was a little more than you asked : ) Just thought I’d add it as info that might help you decide. Oh, also, you could consider finding some of the living books in Science that SCM recommends & just make Science reading those books together, taking nature walks then having fun “researching” anything in those that peaks her interest & do Outdoor Secrets in 2nd, 106 DOC in 3rd (just as an example).
You sound like me. I am always looking a couple of years ahead. We are just starting this fall with my ds 5 1/2 K year. I am planning on doing Outdoor Secrets for Kinder and 106 days for 1st. I heard such great things about both I did not want my kiddos to miss out. I have most of the items for Outdoor Secrets and it looks great! Sonya is also writing a companion study guide for Jack’s Insects that will be for around 4th grade. The great thing about homeschooling is you can do what works best for your family. HTH!
Ok I was thinking along the same lines, to do outdoor secrets first and then 106 days later.
But what about all those living books listed for OS? How many of them do I need to start accruing? Are there other books that would work? Or do I need to buy OS first to see what it recommends? This is the part where I get overwhelmed, tracking down books ….
The books are always good choices, but are easily substituted if you want to get other, similar books at the library. It doesn’t kill the guides to substitute books as needed. Your child will still learn what the lesson intended for them. That said, I love the recommended books that we have gotten. =)
I use the living books suggested on the curriculum guide for independent science reading mostly. For the list of books/topics covered in Outdoor Secrets, have you seen this:
There are two ideas of early elementary age science teaching…some people use just living books and nature journals. Others insist on a more formal set curriculum, like Apologia or God’s Design. Both have their own advantages. In my experience, the SCM modules kind of bridge the gap between the two types. We have enjoyed the guides. =)
