Mind if I post my son’s written narration, so I know if this is what to expect at this age.  I’m not sure if this is what I should expect or not.  🙂  His oral narrations are GREAT, he goes into tons of detail.  His creative writing is also great – I think his stories tend to go above and beyond what I would expect at this age.  But written narrations, I feel like he could do better, but this tends to be be what all of his written narrations look like.  So pointers on if this is good for this age, how to encourage him to do better if that is what is needed etc.  🙂  He’s my oldest, so written narration is a bit new to us.  He is 10 years old (5th grade).

Here is his Narration (mistakes and all) from Wild Animals I Have Known.  I asked him to tell me the story of Lobo the Wolf.

Lobo the Wolf is an amazing story about a hunter and a wolf (and I’m sure you know his name).  Anyway, Lobo was the King of the wolves and nobody could catch him.  The hunters tried everything, poison, traps, tricks, lairs, holes, everything!  Finaly, the best in the business – Ernest T. Seton himself, to try and catch Lobo.  (there was a $1,000 reward on his head.)  He couldn’t think of anything until he set a trap for Lobo and caught his mate instead just when he was about to shoot, He stopped, and thought a minute.  Then he realized “Hey, if I take his mate alive he will come to look for her, then I can kill Lobo!  So he locked her up and sure enough, Lobo came to the rescue.  Ernest lassoed Lobo and put his feet in traps, and the next day he died.

I don’t know the story but it looks pretty good to me for a 10 year old!

Looks excellent to me, too!  But my oldest is 9 in Year 4, and I can’t get her to write more than 3 sentences.  So anything more than that looks awesome.  So take my opinion with a grain of salt.  🙂

Lol Sara – I think that’s why maybe I’m being a bit too hard on him.  (I haven’t even said anything to him, I mean being hard on him in my head. ) I don’t have anyone to compare him with, so I’m really uncertain if this is spot on or not enough!

    Looks about right to me!

This is one of my 5th grader’s recent narrations (he just turned 11):

The Crusades were a series of 9 battles fought by Christians to regain the holy land of Jerusalem and its surroundings. The foundation for The Crusades was laid when the Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantine army in 1071, and blessed by the pope (Urban II) they started in 1095. They did manage to capture Jerusalem for some time, but didn’t totally fulfill their goal. When they finally ended it had almost been 200 years, from 1095-1291!
