What to do, what to do. My son hates writing. He’s currantly in public school and is forced to write daily. This is his biggest struggle. He suffers from writers block almost always and refuses to write just anything. Next year we will be homeschooling and I’m trying to choose a writing program for him. He’ll me 10 in November. WWE does away with the non stop “thinking” about what to write and focuses on the “how to’s”, but it confuses me. I’m not sure where to even start him with because he’s never had to do narrations or dictation before. Should I be concerned with spelling and punctuation? How do I even explain it to him? Writeshop on the other hand, was what the 101 Homschool curriculum book suggested would be best for him, but it seems more of the same to me and not at all CM style. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I’m planning on holding off on formal grammar until the next year, when he’s almost 11.
I’d hold off on writing for a year while he learns how to narrate orally…
I also think you could possibly do WWE just starting with Level 1 – keeping in mind that the narration in it is a bit different from Charlotte Mason style narration – I’d almost call it a Summary…. (Ie, I think I’d say “Summarize”)
I agree with suzukimom. Writeshop will probably not be a great fit right now, because it requires original creativity, even if they do provide the topic. We were not WWE fans. My kids did not like only getting a snippet of a story and you need to “correct” them constantly to answer in complete sentences. Honestly, I found it creative-killing, boring and robotic. (to be blunt! LOL) It works great for some, but it wasn’t for us.
We use a combo of CM style & Bravewriter We read, the kids take turns narrating back (or we do this ala Bravewriter and have a “big juicy conversation”). We recently started a narration jar and the kids LOVE this.
Because he’s reluctant, I would stick with strictly copywork to start. If you want you can add in some Friday Freewrites or other Bravewriter activities. If you sign up for her emails, she sends one a day and they have awesome little activities and tips for writing, and they are free, so you can’t go wrong. 🙂
Thanks guys. I was leaning towards just holding off too, just until he adjusts to the new way of doing things. I guess I was feeling like I need to keep him on track, but first I have to get him on track.
