Wondering if anyone is using this curriculum by Susan Wise Bauer & what the pros/cons are.  I have a son in gr. 2 & a daughter in K.  Thanks for your input!

We use it here at our house. It is basically copy work, dictation (not studied), and narration, both oral and written. I do not think it is superior or even equal to the traditional CM methods of doing these same activities, bit i do think it is compatible with CM. For our family with multiple students all at different levels, it enables me to get these subjects done. Right now it is “good enough” for us. When I was having to rely on myself to pick passages to use for copy work and dictation, those things just weren’t getting done. Writing with Ease is pick up and go for me, with no thought or prep required on my part. I do not start it until my child is comfortably reading on their own. I personally think midway through first grade is a good time to start.

I hope this makes some sense. If you have some specific questions, I will be happy to try and answer them for you.

We are using it and so far, it is working well with both my children. We are first year home schooling, so my children have never done any of these skills in public school. I like it because it has passages from classic books to read to them and have them narrate back. Since I’m just getting to know what my children are interested in etc. It allows me to give them a snippet of a novel and if I see real interest in the book, then I will plan it as a read aloud. I can tell you that we hit wizard of Oz and both kids’ eyes glazed over. We will not be reading that book here for sure. So for right now, it is working well and I will probably use again next year, but I am looking into the EIW as they get older for writing. Of course it doesn’t hurt that I have an EIW expert in my local HS support group. Laughing  HTH      Just as a side note, when I talked to my kids about needing to tweak anything that wasn’t working for them, I was told that my son loves HWOT and narration, he is 7, and his narration is better than what I could do. He gets so animated and into telling me about the passage that I read to him that he is almost as entertaining as tv! I’m thinking drama classes are in his future.    My daughter said her favorite thing is the dictation. She likes the challenge of memorizing the sentence and then writing it correctly. She even looks up any words she doesn’t know how to spel yet. She is 8. So while it may or may not be as good as the CM, it is CM friendly. I am trying to follow more of a CM approach and I think slowly we will get there. I just found out about CM a few months ago, but I am really drawn to it.

    Thank you so much!

pslively: What would make this curriculum non-CM?
