I thought we’d be much further with writing by now. My oldest (who will turn 8 soon) still fights me every step of the way when it comes to writing. At this point, he will write his spelling words a couple times a week but that is it. NO COPY WORK, he hates it. I know I am/was supposed to start with just 5 minutes a day for copy work, but even that feels like torture… for both of us!! I don’t know, does he really need to physically write at this age? How long can we hold off on this? What if he never wants to write? I know he can “write” (oral narration, storytelling, etc.) as long as someone else is actually writing it down for him! Does he need some kind of therapy? Handwriting Without Tears? This is has been a frustrating challenge for us all along.

Does he like to use a white board or chalk board? Maybe a Magna Doodle or a Boogie Board?
I wouldn’t push too hard at this age, but maybe a different surface or supplies would help.

Could you start with less than 5 minutes? My DS hated writing at that age as well, and I think at the time we aimed for just 1 (short) sentence instead of timing it. Now that he’s 10, 5 minutes isn’t a big deal. I think consistent copywork helped with this. It seemed the more he did, the easier it got for him, even though we started with very little writing.
It’s not something I’ve looked into, but are there exercises to work on small motor skills that would help? Also, instead of writing out spelling sentences could he build the words somehow? We have reading rods and letter tiles that I use with my 5yo to build phonics words. I’ve seen on Pinterest where moms have written letters on legos to build words. Our letter tiles are just printed letters on cardstock, so that would be something you could easily print out.
