How do you all teach writing? I am referring to research papers, essays, etc? I know they are to narrate, but how do you teach the more mechanical parts of writing? I am not really comfortable and would like a kind of guide to follow. Not sure if that makes sense, but would like to know what you all would recommend.
I don’t teach writing until the high school years. Charlotte Mason said that writing curriculum used too much or too early would give a child a formulaic writing style that would stay with him for life.
I am amazed at how well my daughter can write after narrating orally since for so many years. She is in middle school now and I couldn’t be more pleased with her writing skills. She’s never used a formal writing program. I plan on using something with her in high school but only for a short time and only after she has firmly developed her own, unique writing style. That is what Charlotte recommended and I am trusting her advice. It hasn’t failed me yet. 🙂
We are using Jump In from Apologia. I had heard that it was taking others 2 years to finish but we will be finishing in one year. It is a pretty good program, it covers a lot.
I like Jump In by Apologia or Essay Styles by EpiKardia in middle school. I’m still a bit unsure exactly which direction we are taking for high school and I have not seen AG’s research paper option (Beyond the Book Report 3), but I was thoroughly underwhelmed and disappointed with Beyond the Book Report 1. So much so, I dropped it for a class I was teaching and switched to Jump In. BBR1 sorely lacked in the instruction department. BBR3 could be different, but I thought I’d share our experience with BBR1 for comparison.
I have used many things for juniorhigh and highschool: IEW, Sharon Watson’s materials(Jump In, etc.) and next year we are trying Character Qualities Language Arts.
We have used WWTB but for some reason it did not work out as I had thought it would. We dropped it in favor of more narrations and writing prompts. I’ve had a difficult time finding something for my oldest (16) but will try Power in Your Hands by Sharon Watson this coming school year.
I used Write with the Best with my older two – now 16 and 21 – when they were in elementary school, and I found it easy to use and not overwhelming. I know you’re asking about higher-level writing instruction but I thought I’d offer this for anyone wondering about WWTB for younger kids. I have a new kindergartner and would like to use it again with her, though I think there are probably curriculums that accomplish what WWTB does “better” now that it’s been several years. HTH!
I thought WWTB was terrible but maybe I was suppose to get a teachers manual w/it!?! It would just take forever to do the exercises and to correct them. Kids hated it almost as much as me.
Thanks for the recommendation Christie, will check that out…
If there was a Like button, I’d click it…or whatever. What Petitemom said. I really wanted to like WWTB and took LOTS of time choosing that curriculum. Possibly it just wasn’t the right time for us. Who knows.
