Under the free curriculum it says to work on certain types of writing (narrative, expository, etc)(this was in grade7,)  in addition to narration. Is there a book suggested to help a parent with these ?  I’m not a confident writer, so not sure how to go about guiding my child to focus on certain types of writing.

We will be including more help in the Using Language Well books. The various types of writing can be requested in a narration pretty easily based on what kind of reading was done. If the reading is mostly a story about events that happened, ask for a narrative (retell the story). If the reading is mostly explaining how something worked, ask for expository (explaining how something works). If the reading is mostly describing scenery of how something looks, ask for a descriptive narration. You can save the persuasive for the upper grades, after the student has had plenty of opportunity to take in ideas, ponder them, and form informed opinions about and personal relations with things.

The blog post, Raising the Bar, contains some sample questions and suggestions that might be helpful.
