When you have your kids do written narrations about the books they’re reading or literature in general, what do they write about? Do they just summarize what happened in the book? Or do you go a little deeper? I am looking for suggestions. I have a 7th grade boy who needs more challenge in this area. What kinds of things could I have him write about for literature?

    Hi Erin! 🙂

I like to look up essay questions for whatever book my daughter is reading and let her pick from them. I just google something like A Tale of Two Cities essay questions. We always find plenty to choose from. They help the student to dig into the reading a bit more and apply critical thinking skills.

    Erin,

I found this particular post discussing “Raising the Bar” extremely helpful when I was needing to increase the difficulty in my middle school students’ narrations.

I’m quite fond of Hearing and Reading, Telling and Writing.  It tends to grace my dining room table around the beginning and end of terms.  Ok…well… this term it sat on the table until yesterday, week 8 of our term.  I put it away but it’ll show back up in a couple of weeks.  lol
