I didn’t really like either of them. My favorite was Meaningful Composition. Timberdoodle sells it now but I bought it from the owners when I first bought it.
I did not like IEW because it’s a lot of money for what you get. Over the years (not just my children) the IEW children’s writing tends to be predictable and flat. MC uses the same philosophy to teach writing but branches out from there. It makes for more well rounded and interesting writing, in my opinion. I honestly don’t remember what I didn’t like about Write With the Best. I still own it but it’s been close to 10 years since I used it.
We did not like IEW because it was too formulaic and the children’s writing was extremely stilted and just boring. We ueed Write with the Best and the girls really liked it, though that is not what we used to teach formal writing. I used the Writer’s Inc book Write for College and set them writing tasks, they used the Write for College book for reference and guidance. There writing improved in leaps and bounds – I have always had them write everyday on something and usually it was something to do with their studies. I also pick something I know interests them and then set an essay topic for them. They write very well and we are pleased with how have progressed over the years. Write with the Best was an extra thing we did and they really did enjoy it, I posted about it before, but could not find it. If I was doing it again, I would not spend the money on IEW and I would stay with copywork and then the couple of the Writer’s Inc books and have them write things through the curriculum like we have been doing – set them various essays and have them write all the types that you are expected to know. Some people love IEW, so to be fair, what worked for us may not work for you – but I have come to the conclusion late in the game for our school, that it does not need to cost a fortune, that you can teach writing with a lot less than IEW costs.
Pollysoup: I have ILL for the next 2 years and am planning Our Mother Tongue after that; would they be compatible w/Meaningful Composition or too much overlap?
Missingthe shire (everytime I see your name, I fondly think of Frodo):Would Write w/the Best then be a secondary tool to grammer and writing courses? How nwould it be used then in that copacitiy? I value the classical examples provided for us and want to make use of them. Would you say then that WwtB isn’t a complete writing curriculum? I thought it was.
Rachel, I have not used ILL or Our Mother Tongue. MC is a writing program not a grammar program, if that helps. OMT, from what I’ve read is a grammar book so I would say there wouldn’t be much overlap. I don’t know about ILL.
