Lishie, my boys are 23, 10 and 10 ( the youngest of these adopted from China 4 years ago.) The 23yo was homeschooled throughout. I discovered CM his first grade year after discovering living books the year before. He is finishing up a degree in mechanical engineering. We do oral narrations each day after many of our readings. The oldest 10yo will begin written narrations this year. My Chinese son is far from being ready for that but is a phenomenal oral narrator. Very detailed oriented. My oldest didn’t do a formal writing program. One thing I would do was take a written narration and work on turning it into an essay by choosing topics and expanding them. He has done VERY well on his writing assignments in college. Many of his professors have told him they have never had a student organize his thoughts and express himself like he does. He attributes it to extensive reading and narrations.

I’m spinning off this thread to a habit topic based on curlywhirly’s “what you wouldn’t do” list.
