Can anyone recommend a good and thorough study of World Religions for a highschooler? Any books, videos, or courses that you know of? Obviously an emphasis on contrasting them with Christianity would be helpful, but not necessary. Thanks as always.

Man! Studying the world’s religions was my absolute favorite thing to learn about in my freshman world history class. I had the BEST teacher! I think she might qualify as a CM instructor, because all of our exams were essay tests! In fact, I remember that our semester final was to compare and contrast the six major religions of the world in a super-duper long essay. Try writing all that out in a 50-minute class period!! Thankfully we were able to cram as much notes as we could on to a 4×6 index card as a “cheat sheet”. We had some of the best discussions in her class and didn’t pull out a textbook once!

So, no, I can’t help you out today, but I did want to pass it on that LOVING world history, specifically a study on the world’s major religions, is totally possible!

    Blessings,

    Lindsey

P.S. I don’t know if they still are, but the six major religions we studied were: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

I ordered Navigating the Worldviews of Egypt book and dvd course because my dh and I enjoy studying about Egypt, but it is geared more towards older students and not my children’s ages. One whole section is on Islam and also one on Christianity, as well as Egyptian sections. It would also go nicely with module 1 for a high school student. I plan to study it weekly with my dh, but I did peak ahead at some of the sections in the book and I like it so far.

Out of curiosity after reading Lindsey’s post, I did a search for the major world religions, and eHow had this list:

Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddism

I also did a search for World Religions course, and came across these:

    Creating World Religions Lessons

World Religions for High School Students – this bloggers whys and wherefores behind the teaching of world’s religions

Greenville County Schools World Religions syllabus – scroll down so that you can see the religions covered in this school’s WR course

Here are some books that I found that might at least make a spine. Please note that I do not have an opinion on any of these.  All were found on CBD.

    Comparing Christianity with World Religions
Understanding World Religions: An Interdisciplinary Approach
AMG’s HandiReference: World Religions & Cults
God Is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World and Why Their Differences Matter
    World Religions: An Indispensable Introduction
    The Facts on World Religions

There are several books that I found in my search for a course/ curriculum that would possibly flesh out some of the information found in the above books.  As a side note, one that I would like to read for my own edification is The Gospel According to Moses: What My Jewish Friends Taught Me about Jesus.  There are several, though that talk in great detail about the other religions in comparison to Christianity as well. So, if anyone has read this and has opinions on it, I would welcome the reviews as this did not have any reviews on CBD.

If you were interested in college courses, you can find several available online.

Hope this is somewhat helpful to you.

Hi my3boys! DS is in 11th and working on preparing for the Dantas World Religions College Level Placement exam. We’ve been using these lesson plans and materials http://clepprep.tripod.com/introtoworldreligions/ . So far it’s a great overview. Not sure if I would use this for an 8th grader though. Seems like I remember My Fathers World having a great suggestion for World Religions. The other ladies here have such great ideas. Wish I could be of more help. Blessings, Heather

Sorry, I just remembered it wasn’t MFW (though they may have some good books on world religions) – it was Sonlight “But Don’t All Religions Lead to God” they recommend it for grades 7-9. Hope you find something great! 😉

    Oh, thanks!

He is interested in the differences in Christian denominations, so I’m looking for a book and comparison chart. I think I have found some interesting products on amazon.

    Thanks again!
