Do you have a favorite world map for the kids to work with? 1st grade and younger

I have our National Geographic world map but I was thinking of something larger, more easily “hands on” for them to really see what we are talking about.

I got a laminated Rand McNallay at Office Depot. I love it and the kids often look at it. DD, 6, taught herself the 4 directions by studying the compass that is printed on it!

Here is a link to the one I have, though like I said, I got mine at Office Depot and it was around $15.

We just got one from Costco ($14.89 + tax) but haven’t used it for school yet (on a break fight now). It’s already laminated and came with a map of the USA as well (also laminated). They are both large, so I’m planning to hang up one at a time. (World map 61″wide x 38″ high and USA map 48″ wide x 38″ high).

I have a world map similar to link above, and also a United States one. I bought a large foam board and used spray adhesive to attach a map on each side. It’s easy to hang as needed and it’s sturdy enough for kids to be hands on with too.

love this idea simple home. do you have it hanging up? if so, how did you do this so it is removable?

I wish I could hang it up all the time, but we school in the kitchen and I usually take it down when not using. I use large office clips and hang it on my wood blinds. It works great because it faces directly to the school table where we sit. Sounds a little funny, but it works for me! 🙂

Oh, I like that idea. I don’t really have a wall to hang it on either. Where do you store it though? Behind or under something???

I have a wonderful school cabinet in the kitchen and it just slides nicely behind it. I like to organize and this is a good way to keep things in order and out of the way. 🙂

I have a world map and USA map like these framed and permanently hung in our kitchen – http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?pid=11068? I paid 19.99 each on amazon, I think. I framed them in wide black frames and they look great. We use them a lot and like the earth tones. Neither hubby or I would want the regular color ones hanging permanently by our table, but we use and like these since they don’t scream school. If that link fails for some weird reason , it is called National geographic executive wall map.

My sis-in-law mounted hers to a piece of sheet metal and framed. They use magnetic pins to mark the missionaries they pray for and support around the world.

I also snagged one of those school style spring loaded pull down map sets off of eBay for $99. These things are hundreds new. I literally kept my eye out for one of these for years! Mine came new in the box and we love it! It hangs inside the school room above the door. You can see it on my blog – http://www.learningwithcharlotte.blogspot.com/2011/10/learning-geography-in-digital-age.html

    Happy map hunting.
