We are using the Middle Ages guide this fall. However, we will not be using Visits to…… I would like to expose my daughter to some world cultures. I was wondering if anyone knows of some good living books in this area that I may be able to find in the library, just for some extra reading. I would say around a grade 4-6 level.
If you look in the samples for each Visits to book, you will find a list of recommended books that are stories of cultures from around the world. You may find some books from those lists that might work for your daughter.
The spine books used in the Visits To series, Hungry Planet and Material World, are great books for getting a glimpse of different cultures. They’re very colorful and engaging and my 9yo pulls these books off the shelf to read on his own. Window on the World is great and focuses on the religious aspect of different parts of the world, and Children Just Like Me (hands down my boys’ favorite) is easy to find very inexpensively on ebay.
Thank you. I will check these out. I am not going to do a lot of geography because of my daughter’s learning disability, but I think she will enjoy hearing stories from around the world. I just didn’t want to spend a lot on books to do this. I just remembered that I have Material World on my shelf from when I tried Visits to Egypt last year. I sold the other one. But, the suggestions here will help.
In addition to those already mentioned, you could check out the books recommended for history and tales on the Wildwood Curriculum pages. They’re for ages 6-9 but the book choices are engaging!
