I have been looking at books like Good Dog, Carl on the preschool list and wanted to know if there is a certain way that these books are used. Do you just talk about the pictures with your kids, have them make up the story each time you “read” it, or something else?
Does anyone use these books for picture sequencing/visual memory skills?
I have a wonderful book, “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick” by Chris VanAllsburg, that my sister introduced me to. The backstory is interesting in and of itself. There are 14 pictures with a single caption written by the artist. The rest of the story is left to your imagination. Apparently there is now a book, “The Chronicles of Harris Burdick”, in which some famous authors have spun their own tale about the pictures. E and I have fun looking at the pictures and coming up with a story!
My DS has enjoyed a new book called ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. It is a 2014 Caldecott Honor book. ‘Goodnight Gorilla’ is another favorite, along with the Carl books.
Carl books are so awesome! We love them! I don’t have to do a single thing! My dd3 loves to just point out things and ask me questions. LOVE them! She isn’t old enough to make up a story but those are by far her favorite books. 🙂
